POC with 3par

Whoohoo

The storage team here is going to have a proof of concept with 3par storage.
That's going to be very interesting.
They asked me if i wanted to join the "testteam" from esx perspective's. Were in the middle of the migration to vsphere but the test's are going to be mainly on the "old 3.5 environment".
If there is time the testing will also take place at the new environment with the mpio settings in place. Iometer is going to be the "measurement tool". Also software developers created a build environment to test with. This all will take place in Januari. Preparing and writing!

its christmas(olmost) :D

mistake's

After i didn't do my exam because of the misplanning i had another issue when installing the new environment. Yea having a great day :D

After installing the new host's i connected the second nic to the service console. Because of this i lost my connection to the host.

Login to the console(local physical machine).

List the nics that are in use by the service console
esxcfg-vswitch -l to list the nic's
Specify the nic you wan't to remove.

esxcfg-vswitch --unlink=vmnic0 vSwitch0
After this vmnic0 is removed from the vswitch and you can connect again to the host with the vi client.

Maybe there is a quicker solution but this worked for me.

road

I didn't had the chance to make picture's at the cdg meeting since my battery died.. But overal is was interesting and fun.

Last month's were like a rollercoaster, preparing for my last mcse exam, learning about Best practises/powershell/vranger/esx environment/ iscsi/ in general troubleshooting esx.
Next goal is getting my vcp exam this is planned for 24 november at 9:00.
Im a little afraid for it because everyone's telling me this one's difficult. But with the help of Simon Long and the books i have, it should be go well^^.

In general the people i speak about virtualisation are openminded people i like that.

I like this kinda movies :)

Some specs
machines 2 cpu's 8 cores 48GB ram per server
total server 37TB ram
storage 348 TB
virtual machine's 37.248 O-o

Past my exam!

Finally got my mcse status. After alot of study hour's i don't know how may i passed my finaly exam today 70-298 892 points!.
It is a design exam and i found this one the hardest. Even 70-291 was not this hard. Atleast in my opinion.
Now my focus is going to be on vmware. Had my training now going to study for the vcp3 exam. Simon Long gave me some tips for study'ing this exam.
I know it's going to be a hard one but if you like the environment the knowledge's come's by itself.(or something like that).

i can call myself mcse certified \o/

vmware workstation

There is some interesting in the releasenotes of 6.5.3
*
Link to releasenote's
Workstation has been updated to power on the latest Microsoft Virtual PC files (.vhd). VMware recommends that you create a copy or linked clone of the image. If you do not create a copy, you cannot run the original virtual machine in VPC after running it in Workstation, because the virtual hardware layer has been modified.

So if im correct the vhd file's will be running without modding it?

Uninstalling vranger pro 4.0DPP

Today I had problems with uninstalling vranger pro 4.0Dpp.

Was getting the error.

Vranger Pro Service couldn't be stopped. – Reason: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

A quick solve is to stop the vranger pro services (start run services.msc) and them uninstall it again.

Sysprep file locations and versions vmware

Running sysprep without files can be hard ;) Vmware has a kb about this which is very handy. All the information is in one place. See link at the bodem.

Description:

Symptoms
When attempting to customize the deployment of a virtual machine the radio buttons are disabled (greyed out).
When a virtual machine (VM) is deployed from a Template, you find that the SID is always the same, despite the fact thatyou chose the option to generate a new SID during Template deployment and guest operating system customization.
When attempting to create a new virtual machine from a Template in ESX v3.5 you receive the following error message:

Warning: Windows customization resources were not found on this server
Message in the guestcust.log:

* Running screen savers wastes CPU resources
* There is no interface option to disable the screen saver on the log on screen in Windows

To disable Windows Logon Screen Saver:
Click Start > Run, type regedit, click OK.
Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

Double-click the ScreenSaveActive string value item in the Details pane.

Vmware perfmon "addin"

Scott Drummonds created the following post on the vmware communities:
They are busy too ! :)

My colleague in product management, Praveen Kannan, has been working to extend Perfmon to show some ESX performance counters. This capability is automatically installed with VMware Tools on vSphere 4. But Praveen and I have made a stand-alone version available to those of you that are still on VI3. Download it here to give it a try.

To install, place the file in an appropriately-named directory on any Windows VM on VI3. Double-click the executable, which will self-extract the files into the same directory. Run "install.bat" and you're done.

Once you bring up Perfmon you'll see two new performance objects on your computer: "VM Memory" and "VM Processor". These objects contain counters exposed by ESX that accurately reflect the VM's memory and CPU usage. Here's Perfmon on my test VM after I've installed the tool.

Disclaimer:
This is a pre-release "sneak peak" version. Eventually this tool will be available for download on vmware.com and supported by VMware. But today there is no support for this tool and you're using it "as-is". Use at your own risk and do not contact VMware support for help with this release.

WMI ADAP was unable to load the ASP.NET performance library because it returned invalid data: 0x0

I was getting a error/warning in my eventviewer.

WMI ADAP was unable to load the ASP.NET performance library because it returned invalid data: 0x0

Resolve this by:

To prevent the performance counter library (Perflib) from checking counters, you can disable the Extensible Performance Counters library or remove it. Use one of the following methods to do this:• To use the Extensible Counter tool (ExCtrlLst.exe) to disable the Perfctrs.dll performance counters, follow these steps:1. Start the Exctrlst.exe tool. This tool is in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
2. Select the DLL (Perfctrs.dll) that did not open in the Extensible Performance Counters list box.
3. Click to clear the Performance Counters Enabled check box.
4. Restart the computer.

Buslogic to Lsi

Why this is necessary
Vmware recommended setting is to use the LSI driver instead of the Buslogic driver. The purpose of this document is to increase the performance of the virtual machine by changing the SCSI adapter from Buslogic to LSIlogic.

1.2 How to
Make sure the machine’s harddisk is on persistent.
Browse to the datastore.
Download the vmx file to your desktop.
Always keep a backup of the vmx file. So make a extra copy of it.

We are manually installing an extra scsi LSI controller in the vmx file.

Open the vmx file in Notepad ++ make sure it is working in unix format. Because it could happen that the vmx file is wrongly read by esx if it is in windows format.
Find the entry in the vmx file.
scsi0.present = "true"
scsi0.virtualDev = "buslogic"
If it does not exist’s create the entry.

Now we are going to add the new lsi scsi adapter.
Add the line behind the scsi0.
scsi1.present = "true"
scsi1.virtualDev = "lsilogic"

Save the vmx file.
And upload it to the datastore.

Boot the machine and see that u have 2 scsi controllers!

one lsi and one buslogic.
Login to the machine and check device manager.

If the driver is not automaticly installed (click search )
Then download the driver from www.lsilogic.com search for LSI20320 (windows xp x86 32bit)
Do not install the latest driver (as written1.28) but download WHQL 1.20.18.00 MID 1005239 Initiator/Target bios/fw and Microsoft Certified driver.

Once installed shutdown the virtual machine.
Download the vmx file.
Edit vmx file.
Remove the 2 entries
scsi1.present = "true"
scsi1.virtualDev = "lsilogic"
Save the vmx file
Upload it to the correct datastore.
Change the scsi driver from buslogic to lsilogic.
Boot the machine and you will have a much better performance

Buslogic to LSI on esx

Ok its written all over the internet but im gonna do it again :)

We have some machines on our esx env. that are still on buslogic configuration. We want to change this to LSI (recommended config by vm). To have a performance increase.
Enviroment (38 xp machines buslogic non persistent)
Steps to take
Shutdown vm
change diskmode
Download the vmx file
edit vmx file
add lsi scsi
upload the vmx file
boot with 2 scsi adapters
shutdown vm
edit vmx file

Ps dont download the latest version from lsilogic. The 1.28.3.0 does not work correctly in windows xp.
I now used 1.20.18.0 from the lsilogic website. This is working. On the esx server itself the version 1.21.26.0 is installed. Not figured out how to use this in the windows xp installation.

Ch3snas xbox360 streaming

okok i was a little to fast with my design... i thought i could hook up my xbox360 to my wlan and stream directly from the nas...
NOT,..... well not in the first place.

There is a workaround founded on this forum.
Finally-enjoy-video-streaming-xbox360

And it works like a charm :D gonna watch WMV kongfu panda!
The plugin is based on Funplug 0.4.

Install fonz's fun_plug 0.4 by downloading funplug-0.4.tar.gz from
Funplug 0.4
Unrar the files(fun_plug and fun_plug.tar) and place these in the root of your Ch2snas.

Reboot the Snas via the webconsole or 5 seconds powerdown on the device itself.
Wait untill its up again. The volume will have an fun_plug.d directory.

Till now only funplug is installed. Now Ushare!

ushare-1.1a-fun-plug.tgz Its listed in the post.

Place the file in the root of the Ch3snas.

Telnet to the Ch3snas.

cd /mnt/HD_a2/

Then run the command

funpkg.sh ushare-1.1a-fun-plug.tgz (ushare-1.1a-fun-plug.tgz which u have placed in the root before)

Restart your Ch3snas.

U can edit the config file in the etc directory

Ch3snas Going to test.

There is a " known" problem of data loss in the ch3cnas.

The words are that u loose data when u connect a new disk in the device.
It ask's to format but it formats the wrong drive accoding to people.

There is some workaround but then u have to shut down the device and put in the new disk.. and thats not what u want when u have a raid1 configuration. :)

Going to test.

Install w2k3 64x on T7400

After 2 hours... we managed to install a w2k3 64x OS on a DELL T7400.

The internal SAS raid was blocking the installation.
Finally we used the W2k3 driver Dell SAS 6/iR Integrated driver of the Poweredge 1950to install the raid controller on the T7400 machine. There are no server drivers on the dell website for the T7400, u will have to download it from the poweredge 1950.
Placed it on a floppy and loaded the driver into windows setup(F6).

Xbox360 Harddisk flash

Just received my ebay item from canada today.
A broken 20GB harddisk for the Xbox360.

Bought a new 120GB harddisk for it and flashed the harddisk to a xbox360.

So for 50 Euro i got a working 120GB Xbox360 disk.
Okok after i bought the drive there was a price drop from120 Euro to 70 euro for a new one... so the time vs cost... ah well :)

Use Windows Bluetooth Module Dell issue M4300

We have an issue with the bluetooth drivers provided by dell... Random bsod no good connection etc.

You can solve it by using the bluetooth driver from windows as this is standard installed from windows xp sp2 and later. But windows does not recognize all the modules.
Here is how to fix it.

Using the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack
1 Uninstall alle current Bluetooth drivers

Example!: i want to add ebluetooth device called
Dell Bluetooth with vendor USB\Vid_413C&Pid_8140

Edit the %windir%\inf\bth.inf
Add under the section a new device.

;----------------------- Device section - Start -----------------------
[ALPS.NT.5.1]
ALPS Integrated Bluetooth Device= BthUsb, USB\Vid_044e&Pid_3005
Alps Bluetooth USB Adapter= BthUsb, USB\Vid_044e&Pid_3006

Dell Bluetooth with vendor USB\Vid_413C&Pid_8140

Save and exit. And the device will take the standard Bluetooth driver from windows
